I Have To Ask-what is SOS and Shagging?

I really need to ask- what is all this business about shagging? I read a few posts and it seems like it%26#39;s either a dance or a word for clubbing? The only reference I know about shagging is from Micheal Myers movies (I even forge the name of the movie but it referred to hooking up) Anyway...can anyone fill me in on all this shagging business?

If you live in Myrtle Beach, particularly North MB, then almost everyone shags. Most dancers are older but there are plenty of ';junior'; shaggers around as well. SOS is Society of Shaggers and they have 2 main events every year in North Myrtle Beach- shaggers and shag clubs come from all over the country, one in April and one in Sept. Shagging is so very common here, we do forget there are people who have no idea what it is.

Not positive but I think the documentary Myrtle Beach Memories had a bit about shagging. Not 100% sure if it was from that film but somewhere I heard the dance steps are traced back to the jitterbug.

After WW II they had jitterbug contests across the country. Wasn%26#39;t long before ';professional'; dancers would travel around to compete in local contests. Their moves were becoming much too ';R'; rated for small town America.

Local officials stepped in and started passing laws to cut back on the racy moves. The slowed down version became Shagging.

Again I can%26#39;t guarantee how accurate that is but that%26#39;s how I understood it.

I was flipping the channels 2-3 days ago and saw Vanna White shagging at the OD Pavilion in North Myrtle Beach on Wheel of Fortune. They also showed her eating at Hoskins Restaurant and Original Painters Homemade Ice Cream in her hometown.

The original Carolina Shag is said to have originated in North Myrtle Beach%26#39;s Atlantic Beach area, but many agree on the modern form of the dance being danced in the North Myrtle Beach area known as OD or Ocean Drive in the mid 1940s. Dancing on the beautiful white sand beach helped change this dance as well, where it gets it%26#39;s nickname as ';Beach Dancing'; to ';Beach Music.';

The City of North Myrtle Beach is the birthplace of the Shag, the official South Carolina State Dance. The Ocean Drive section of North Myrtle Beach (referred to as “OD” by locals) is the host of two, week long ';migrations'; of shaggers in April and September of every year. Sponsored by the Society of Stranders (SOS), the events bring thousands of devotees of this unique dance to North Myrtle Beach’s Main Street to shag, party and visit with old friends. The Shag dance was born right here is North Myrtle Beach and is a cross between the jitterbug and swing dancing, combining fancy footwork and smooth moves.

Today, the ';Shag'; is known as an East Coast Swing dance with some West Coast Swing influence. The ';Shag'; is comprised of fancy footwork by the leading partner, with the follower partner matching the leaders%26#39;s footwork occasionally. Originally, it was the lady who called out what footwork she wanted to follow. There are only a few patterns performed in Carolina Shag but a large amount of footwork is required.

Carolina Shag became known as ';Beach Swing'; and was done to ';Beach Music';, influenced by Motown, Blues and Oldies music as it is presently known. The Shag is performed mostly in states such as Florida, the Carolina%26#39;s, Virginia and Georgia. It has a smooth feel and became the official state dance of South Carolina in 1984.

Most shaggers now are in their 50%26#39;s and 60%26#39;s but there are shaggers in their teens, 20%26#39;s, 30%26#39;s, 40%26#39;s and 70%26#39;s. Shagging is a beach music dance and North Myrtle Beach is it%26#39;s home. Here%26#39;s some links...

I am a Beach Music fanatic, but I am not a shagger......yet. I just LOVE the music.

My Wife and I are planning our vacation around this years SOS, so the music is what brings us, besides the other cool things about the Grand Strand.

Next time you are at the video store, check out a movie called ';Shag';. it is a fun summer, teen, come of age, last weekend together type of movie some would call a ';chick flick: but it is fun. I think it takes place in the early 60%26#39;s. it features some great music, dancing and romance.

There is also a movie, simply entitled %26#39;Shag%26#39;. It was made in the late 80%26#39;s, and ironically enough I grew up with it being a favorite. My mother and I had our first trip to Myrtle Beach last summer, and one of the shop keepings at Broadway at the Beach asked my mother to go shagging with him! lol

The movie is actually kind of cute, it was shot on location in MB as well.
