Help needed to plan trip to Hilton Head

We are planning to drive from Philadelphia to Hilton Head next June. I%26#39;ve already had some brilliant suggestions from Philly forum about things to do and some stop offs enroute (Baltimore, DC, Raleigh) We are from England and will have our 6 year old son with us so any help and advice is gratefully received. What is the Disney resort like in Hilton Head??? We would ideally love a week . cheers.

I have never been to the Disney Resort in Hilton Head, but most Disney Resorts are nice. I don%26#39;t think this resort is on the Atlantic side.

South Forrest Beach is one of the best beaches there, its also a great place to watch the sunrise.

You must see the sunset from Harbour Town.

Hello,

I just came back from HHI and I saw the Disney resort it is aprox. 5 minutes drive from the beach, the resort is located near a marina. They have a beach house located in the Palmetto Dunes plantation and they provide a shuttle between both locations. We were staying just beside the beach house at the Villamare complexe and the beach is very nice.

Thanks, this really helps us to make our decisions. Could you recommend any beach resorts, I%26#39;ve heard that the Westin is rather nice. Judith

I would recommend staying in the Palmetto Dunes. If you would like to stay at a hotel you can stay a the Marriott or you can rent a condo. I have always rented a condo in Captains Walk. Other suggestions would be the Villamare or Captains Cove. These places all share a beach with the Disney Beach Club so if you want to use there pool or snack hut you can. Also the hotels have a pretty good beach bar for you guys.

If you are looking at a hotel resort, you are talking the Marriott and Hilton in Palmetto Dunes, the Westin in Port Royal, or the Crowne Plaza in Shipyard. All are on the beach. I have stayed at the Hilton and the Marriott, and both are very nice, though different. We were actually at the Marriott last week.

After some research, I booked last week%26#39;s trip through P****line. If you enter a ';resort'; request, you will get one of these four hotels. Each would be fine, particularly for the $80.00 a night we got for the Marriott.

The Disney Resort is in the Shelter Cove area of the island. You have to cross the main road Rte 278 to get to the Atlantic. As stated by others the Resort does have a beach house in Palmetto Dunes and they run a tram there often.

The resort is a Disney property but do not assume that it is overrun with Disney characters. We are about 5 hours drive from Disney World so while there is a Disney Motif, don%26#39;t expect to meet with Mickey or Minnie on the beach.

The resort is a timeshare property and you will be housed in a flat.

Frankly most visitors rent flats for their visit, rather than stay at a hotel property. Others have posted information about VillaMare and Captains Walk. These two properties are located directly between the Marriott hotel and the Hilton Hotel. You can rent a two bedroom flat with a magnificent Atlantic ocean view for about $2000 a week.

The flats come equipped with full kitchens, and laundry facilities. Many have Internet broadband connections. Many also come with Tennis and golf packages, You can walk to Two Golf Courses and a top rated tennis complex from the area.

They also have pools and VillaMare has a fitness center.

I%26#39;m surprised that you plan to drive from Philadelphia. There is direct Air service from Philadelphia to Savannah Ga. Since you are coming from the UK, I imagine An airline ticket for the three of you would cost about the price of a car rental and petrol. Of course you would miss some time in visiting other spots. remember however, we drive on the wrong side of the road here.

Baltimore and Washington are on the way to Hilton Head, but Raleigh is a bit off the route. You might want to visit Colonial Williamsburg VA. if you want to get off of the direct route I95.

You will love Hilton Head. It is a lovely place to be, and very quiet.

I would consider a flat rental. As mentioned, Villamare is nice, but Windsor just down the beach is my favorite. Visit vrbo.com and look at some of the units you can lease direct from an individual. It is cheaper, and most of the condo owners are nice to work with.

If you like to bike, Sea Pines is wonderful. It is a gated community with loads of bike paths. There you might have better luck renting a house, but the price goes up. On vrbo.com, you can shop by neighborhood.

Cheers,

Liz

Thanks for all the advice and info. This will be our 10th visit to America and we wanted to do something other than Florida and the parks. We went to california last year and drove to Las Vegas for a few days and we really enjoyed the experience so wanted to look at planning a longer %26#39;road trip%26#39;, although the sound of a flight from Philadelphia straight to Hilton Head is quite tempting.

I should also mention it is a long and rather dull drive from Philly to HHI. Better than ten hours, if I remember correctly.

Happy trails,

Liz
