Looking for a hotel in the middle of everything

I posted a topic earlier and was probably not very specific. My husband and two teen age sons will be traveling to Myrtyle Beach for July 4, 2008. This is our first trip to Myrtle Beach. I am looking for a nic hotel that has two bedrooms and is oceanfront. I would like for the hotel to be in the middle of the activity of Myrtle Beach. While looking at all the hotels I am not sure what area or road is the best to stay. We want to be located in the middle of the shops, restaraunts, etc.....

Just so you know, there really isn%26#39;t a ';middle of everything';.

You have:

North Ocean Boulevard (Myrtle Beach)

South Ocean Boulevard (Myrtle Beach)

North Ocean Boulevard (North Myrtle Beach)

South Ocean Boulevard (North Myrtle Beach)

And a lot in between.

I would say, as I always do, that the area near Broadway at the Beach would be ideal or not too far from there and say Barefoot Landing

If you are looking for oceanfront the room selection should say Oceanfront or if it says Angle Oceanfront it%26#39;s just as good if not better sometimes.

We like Coral Beach. It has always been clean when we stayed there and we aint NEVER had a problem there. They have a bowling alley, arcade(with pool tables), 10 pools, store, restaurant, etc. For the adults they have a ocean front beach bar and a comedy club. They have poolside karoke some nights also. It may be every night but I aint sure.

Hi. Saw your post and had to comment. We used to stay at Dayton House and it is a wonderful place but with having two teenage boys I do not think the room will be big enough for you and there is only one bathroom in the room. Don%26#39;t know about your boys but with my two I wanted not only my own bedroom away from theirs and my own bathroom. LOL. We have stayed at Kingston Plantation both Margate and Brighton Tower. We rented from owners and except for one time it worked out great. I would go with what the others recommend. I loved their restaurant suggestions they made for me. I know you will have a great time. Pick up some cheap boogie boards at one of the stores and the boys will have a good time in the ocean.

One of the other posters was correct in saying there really is a ';center-of-it-all'; location in Myrtle Beach. If you plan on staying on the beach (Ocean Blvd) than you%26#39;ll have to have a car to experience most of the shopping and restaurants you%26#39;re looking for. Even so, you%26#39;re only a short drive to most attractions. Most MB visitors drive in or have a rental car, will this be the case with you?

If so, then you should be OK anywhere up and down Ocean Blvd. in Myrtle Beach. Please keep in mind Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach are two entirely separate towns (who have chosen to name their streets almost identical to one another) so make sure you make note of what town the hotel is actually located in.

Ocean Blvd in Myrtle Beach runs about 8.5 miles from the north end to south end. Starting roughly around 76th Ave North (on the north end) and wrapping up just past 29th Ave South (you guess it, on the south end). It actually goes a bit further north but there is nothing located up there of interest for a tourist unless your staying at Marriott’s Ocean Watch Villas at 82nd Ave N. The blocks count down until you get to 1st Ave and count up going the other direction. You can have a general idea of where the hotel is located by the address block. For example, 2600 South Ocean Blvd would be roughly located around 26th Ave S. Even on a busy day you can drive from one end of Ocean Blvd to the other in less than 30 minutes, in most cases 15.

Ocean Blvd runs parallel to Kings Hwy (also called 17 Business), the Robert Grissom Pkwy, and 17 Bypass, in that order getting further from the beach. It%26#39;s about 3 miles from Ocean Blvd to 17 Bypass. The numbered blocks run perpendicular.

I%26#39;ve told you that to give you a general concept of where most points of interest are located.

SHOPPING

Broadway at the Beach : 21st Ave N and Robert Grissom Pkwy.

This is going to be your main stop for shopping, dining, and nightlife. There%26#39;s approximately 100 shops, 20 or so restaurants, movie theatres, mini-golf, a small amusement park, the aquarium, and much more.

Coastal Grand Mall: 17th Ave S and 17 Bypass.

New mall built in 2003, 130 or so stores, move theatre, and food court. The mall is surrounded by the standard chain restaurants. If you have time eat at Sticky Fingers (a regional BBQ restaurant - fantastic) located just outside the South entrance to the mall.

Barefoot Landing: 4898 Hwy 17 Bypass in NORTH Myrtle Beach

This could be up to a 40 minute drive with summer traffic depending on where you%26#39;re staying. This is North Myrtle Beach%26#39;s answer to Broadway at the Beach. Some folks may disagree, but if you have time to visit only one, head to Broadway.

Hammock Shops: Pawleys Island 20 miles South of Myrtle Beach

I normally wouldn%26#39;t suggest something quite so far out but if you could start the day with a nice drive to the Hammock Shops and spend the afternoon having lunch at one of the many great restaurants on the marsh in Murrells Inlet (I would highly recommend Bovines). After lunch you could take a stroll on the Murrells Inlet boardwalk.

DINING

As far as dining is concerned you can’t help but be in the middle of it all in Myrtle Beach. There are well over 1,000 restaurants serving the Grand Strand but you’ll still need to plan on jumping in the car to get to most of the good ones. If you’d like more information on dining options I’ll help you in another thread.

HOTEL OPTIONS

Being a MB local, I haven’t personally stayed in many hotels. First off, if staying directly on the beach isn’t top priority you could save some money and be closer to the shopping and dining you mentioned. Check out the Hampton Inn Broadway at the Beach. It’s located right at Broadway at the Beach and would give the teenagers the ability to get out and explore Broadway on their own (if that’s the kind of thing you’re looking for) without having to hand over the keys to the rental. Also, with the new Hard Rock Park (amusement park with the Hard Rock Café brand) opening up this summer in fantasy harbor you may want to take a look at the Staybridge Suites. Fantasy Harbor is about 10 minutes away from the beach and the same distance from Broadway at the Beach. I actually stayed at the Staybridge while we were waiting to move into our house. It was very clean, had great staff, and free breakfast and happy hour. We had a two bedroom unit for a very reasonable price.

If you’re certain you want to be on the beach, take a look at the Breakers North Tower. They’re in a great location and have received some pretty good tripadvisor reviews. With location being somewhat irrelevant if you plan on staying on the beach I would try to find some good trip reviews and check out the “candid travelers photos” listed on this site. In my opinion, Marriotts Ocean Watch Villas/Grand Dunes is hands down the nicest hotel in Myrtle Beach but you’ll pay a premium to stay there. The Island Vista, formerly the Sea Island Inn, went through drastic changes and now is ranking very high among visitors as well. Both of these are located on the north end of the beach.

';In the middle of everything'; used to mean near the Pavilion because that%26#39;s where everyone went. Now most of the attractions like Broadway at the Beach, etc are spread out everywhere. If you want to stay in a hotel that%26#39;s centrally located though, I recommend The Breakers. It%26#39;s centrally located on the oceanfront downtown near the old Pavilion area...there are things all around that you can walk to... and it%26#39;s a very short drive right up 21st Ave (I think that%26#39;s right?) to Broadway at the Beach which is full of restaurants, attractions, and shopping and the new Coastal Grande Mall. The kids will really like it here.
