Airport Info

Hello! My parents are brand new residents of the Charleston area. My husband and I will be visiting them over the Christmas holiday. We have a lot of time off work that time of year and are planning on going on a vacation directly after Christmas before we return home to NYC. Our destination is yet to be determined (my husband is thinking Europe but I鈥檓 rather stuck on something tropical).

At any rate 鈥?I鈥檓 hoping someone can advise me what airports serve the Charleston area. Is there maybe a larger airport an hour鈥檚 drive away that might be best for me as I search for direct international flights and the best bargains?

Airport Info

Charleston (CHS) is the largest airport in the area. The closest airports of any size would be Savannah or Columbia and they are not ';close'; and not significantly larger. To get direct flights to Europe you%26#39;d have to go to Charlotte or Atlanta...Charlotte is 3 and a half hours away. Most major east coast carriers serve Charleston- it would be an easy international connection. Best wishes.

CHS is definitely your most convenient airport. Even if you have to use a connecting flight, you will probably want to start from CHS. Rather than driving to Charlotte, you might as well come back to NYC (there are frequent flights from CHS to both LGA and EWR), and start your vacation trip from home. You can often get vaery good round trip fares from New York to Charleston. Tickets to Europe and the Caribbean out of New York are usually cheaper, and you can avoid lugging your vacation gear to Charleston.

If you decide to head directly to Europe, United has a direct, same-day connection to London out of Charleston. You leave Charleston in the early am, change planes in DC, and arrive in London (Heathrow) in the evening. You can also connect to evening (overnight) flights to various European destinations, but many of those connections are through the NYC airports.

The US Airways flight to London with connections in Charlotte is quite easy.
